With Olive Trees, Paolo May draws inspiration from the series by Vincent van Gogh dedicated to the olive groves of Saint-Rémy. Van Gogh saw in these trees a symbol of resilience and spirituality, able to withstand wind and intense light. In this 3D reinterpretation, created using mixed media – clay, glazes and colors on wood – May captures the vitality of the Mediterranean landscape, transforming trunks and foliage into textured reliefs that emphasize the sun at the center of the scene.
Colors in images may appear slightly different or more saturated depending on the device used.
Between 1889 and 1890, during his stay in Saint-Rémy, Vincent van Gogh created a series of works dedicated to olive groves. In these twisted and resilient trees, the artist saw the strength of nature and a spiritual dimension that connected earth and sky.
The olive trees became a recurring subject, symbolizing struggle and human resilience, illuminated by intense, sunlit skies.
In Olive Trees, Paolo May reinterprets this theme through a three-dimensional language. Trunks and foliage are shaped in clay and finished with glazes and colors, creating volume and movement.
May does not replicate Van Gogh’s work, but pays tribute to its spirit, blending inspiration with a personal artistic language. The result is an interpretative homage, where Mediterranean nature is reimagined through forms and colors that unite tradition and contemporary expression.
