With Maronti Beach, Paolo May pays tribute to Ischia’s most famous and longest beach (about 3 km), set between hills and rugged coastline. Created in 3D using mixed media – clay, glazes and colors on wood – the artwork captures the coastal profile and the intensity of Ischia’s sea through rich textures and vibrant visual expression.
Colors in images may appear slightly different or more saturated depending on the device used.
Maronti Beach is the longest on the Island of Ischia, stretching for nearly 3 km between Barano and Sant’Angelo. Its name, possibly of Greek origin (“maronti” meaning “quiet beach”) or Latin (“quartior”), reflects the calm and welcoming nature of this place.
In this work, May shapes hills, sea and shoreline in relief, using mixed media on wood. Clay, glazes and colors create evocative textures and a strong sense of movement.
Maronti has long been a place of history: once a refuge for pirates, later home to rural communities, and today a beloved seaside destination. In this artwork, May brings together this natural and cultural heritage through a contemporary and tactile vision.
