Ischia honey from apiaries
nestled in the island’s natural landscape

our story

a return to the land and our roots

Boccaneto is a small family-run farm in Barano d’Ischia, in the Toccaneto area. It was officially founded in 2021, although its journey began in 2018, born from a desire to reconnect more directly with the land, the bees and the rhythms of nature.

At the heart of the business is Angelo Ricci, founder, beekeeper and head of production. His decision to take up beekeeping grew out of a genuine passion and a deep connection with the Ischia countryside and the traditions handed down by his grandparents.

Boccaneto’s story began with days spent among vineyards, woodlands, wild herbs, chestnut trees and farmyard animals. From this simple, down-to-earth world, a family project has grown that preserves the island’s most authentic character.

For Boccaneto, beekeeping is not simply about producing honey: it means following the flowering seasons, protecting biodiversity and telling the story of Ischia through a genuine product shaped by the seasons, the apiaries and the nature surrounding each hive.

our apiaries

between sea and mountains, in the heart of the island

Our apiaries are located in different parts of the island of Ischia: in Toccaneto, on the slopes of Mount Epomeo, on the western side of the island, in the Forio area and in another location on the island’s eastern side.

Each site is chosen for its natural balance: wild vegetation, small orchards, citrus groves, woodland, Mediterranean scrub, chestnut groves, oaks and holm oaks create a rich, varied environment deeply connected to the Ischia landscape.

Here, the bees gather precious nectar from a wide range of blossoms, influenced by the mild climate, volcanic soil and sea air. It is from this meeting of land, wind, flowers and seasons that honeys with ever-changing aromas, colours and nuances are born.

For Boccaneto, each apiary tells the story of a specific part of the island: the greener, more mountainous character of Toccaneto, the strength of Mount Epomeo, the light of the western slopes and the variety of the eastern side. This is not standardised honey, but a living product, rooted in its land and in the bees’ daily work.

OUR HONEY

the character of an extraordinary land

Boccaneto honeys come from harvests that change with the seasons and the blossoms available. Each jar holds a different part of the island: colour, aroma, intensity and texture can naturally vary from one year to the next.

This is not a uniform honey designed to taste the same every time, but a living product shaped by the bees’ work and the richness of Ischia’s floral biodiversity. This natural variation is precisely what makes it authentic: each harvest captures a particular moment in nature.

The volcanic soil, sea air, the mild climate and wild blossoms all help create honeys with different notes: more delicate, floral and mellow at certain times of year; more intense, aromatic and lingering at others.

For Boccaneto, honey is the result of a simple balance: healthy bees, a respected environment, careful processing and patience. An honest, essential product that brings the island of Ischia’s most natural character to the palate.

a taste of what we make

the taste of nature

CHESTNUT

Dark, intense honey from Mount Epomeo, gathered among wild chestnut trees and brambles. It has bold, bitter and earthy notes with a pleasant freshness; ideal with cheese and savoury dishes.

WILDFLOWER - MOUNT EPOMEO

Light, delicate honey produced between April and May in the higher reaches of Ischia. With fruity and floral notes of apricot and vanilla, it rarely crystallises and received a Goccia d’Oro award in 2024.

WILDFLOWER - LEVANTE APIARY

Light, sweet and delicate honey produced between April and May at the Levante Apiary, in eastern Ischia. Floral and fruity, it comes from citrus blossom, ailanthus and acacia, and crystallises naturally.

WILDFLOWER - PONENTE APIARY

Dark, warm woodland honey harvested on Mount Epomeo between July and August. Rich in honeydew, it has caramelised, smoky and gently tangy notes; it is less sweet and does not crystallise.

FRESH BEE POLLEN

Fresh bee pollen in small, colourful granules, gathered by bees from flowers. Kept at low temperatures, it retains its aroma, flavour and natural qualities better than dried pollen.

experiences

apiamo ischia

We believe in the value of knowledge and sharing. Through the ApiAmo Ischia project, we open our apiaries to schools, associations and visitors, offering a close-up look at the world of bees and the essential role they play in nature.

During these sessions, adults and children can observe frames, combs, beekeeping tools and moments from life inside the hive, discovering beekeeping in a simple, safe and respectful way.

For Boccaneto, these experiences are more than educational activities: they are a way to encourage care for the environment, respect for pollinating insects and awareness of the link between bees, blossom, local landscapes and the quality of the food we bring to the table.

Learning about bees means learning how to protect a precious part of the natural world that supports us every day.

our method

respectful beekeeping, genuine honey

At Boccaneto, we practise respectful, sustainable beekeeping:

  • Supplementary feeding kept to a minimum
  • Treatments using only natural products and organic acids
  • Honey is neither heated nor pasteurised
  • Filtered only through stainless-steel mesh
  • Naturally settled and jarred by hand

Commitment to quality

We are currently in the process of converting to organic production, for a future increasingly in harmony with nature.

an important note

small harvests, a distinctive identity

Each honey is produced in limited quantities and follows the island’s natural flowering cycle. Some varieties may not be available all year round.

It is this variation that makes every jar of Boccaneto honey an authentic, never standardised product.
